Why Singapore Maths?
by: Nerilou Asuncion
In Singapore, the two largest budget items of government expenditure are defense and education. Also, basic and higher education are mostly supported by the state. The framework of its Mathematics Curriculum revolves around Mathematical Problem Solving while the key features are developing the students' attitudes, metacognition, processes, concepts, and skills. Attitude includes beliefs, interests, appreciation, confidence and perseverance.
Metacognition is the ability of each student to monitor one's thinking and self-regulation of learning.
Processes include reasoning, communication, connections, thinking skills, heuristics, applications and modeling.
Concepts include numerical, algebraic, geometric, statistical, probabilistic, and analytical.
This framework can help develop a variety of skills, including numerical calculation, spatial visualization, algebraic manipulation, measurement, use of mathematical tools, estimation, and data analysis.
This framework is one of the strengths of Singapore Math, and the other two are the approach or teaching strategies used and the consolidation of the content. They use the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) Approach in teaching. It is proven to be an effective way to learn math in many countries in Asian and American schools, tuition centers, and homeschools.
In the latest data sent to us by worldpopulationreview.com, Singapore's PISA score by country 2023 is 1669 with a population of 6, 014, 723, placing them in the 2nd spot in the overall ranking.
But Why does it Matter?
The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) program is global. It involves testing around 600,000 fifteen-year-old students from various countries to assess their science, reading, and mathematics skills and knowledge. The PISA test measures students' ability to solve real-world problems rather than just testing their memory of facts. A good score on the test is associated with economic success, so researchers use it to indicate whether schools adequately prepare students for the global knowledge economy of the 21st century.
